SMD vs. DIP | What’s the Difference?


Image result for two choicesWhen considering the purchase of an LED Display many factors come into play, but one of the most important decisions you will make is whether to choose SMD or DIP Led’s. This choice depends on where and who you want your message projected to. Though both technologies have made significant improvements since their introduction, there are still clear differences between them.

DIP (dual in-line package) is the first generation of Led technology and is well known for it’s durability. DIP utilizes a simple system of 3 led’s to create one pixel. Each pixel is comprised of 1 red, 1 blue and 1 green LED and together they create an RGB pixel. This type tends to find more use in Outdoor applications as it can run significantly brighter than SMD thus enabling it to be more visible in direct sunlight or at greater viewing distances. Being that it is the original LED display makes it the simpler/cheaper of the two technologies to manufacture.

SMDs (surface mounted device) are the newer generation of two technologies utilizing a 3 in 1 design to make one pixel. They are usually smaller than DIPs because they are packaged all into one Bulb. These are then soldered to one “surface” of a circuit board making their design lighter, thinner and more energy efficient. SMD technology is most likely to be found in Indoor applications at is usually has a smaller pixel pitch and better resolution and better viewing angles than its elder. Nowadays SMD is starting to make its way into the outdoor display market and becoming a more popular choice.
